A long journey
18th March, 2008Its been a long journey to this most southern part of the World. Leaving behind the beautiful coastline of Chile and Argentina we have now been at sea for over 40hours, travelling over relatively calm waters. The gentle rocking of the boat combined with all the sea sickness medication possible induced a slight weariness and resulted in me sleeping for an almost entire 24 hours. (Probably also caused by the last 3 weeks of being incredibly busy to get organised for this once in a lifetime trip). But the only things to see were the waters of the southern ocean, the low hanging cloud and some albatross birds. We were rewarded today for our patience when we came upon some pods of fin whales and our first iceberg – taller and wider than our boat (84metres). Wow that was exhilarating.
We have been briefed on the wildlife we can expect to see, safety procedures and the plans for our first landing on the Antarctic. The air outside is about 5 degrees and we can expect it to get much colder on land particularly if there is a strong wind. But I am prepared and eagerly anticipate being on solid ground.
A special note to my beautiful children Mia, Nicolo and Luca and gorgeous husband Marc – although we are separated by this enormous distance you are in my heart and mind – love you all.

Thinking of you and fellow travelers, as you approach one of the cores of our fragile little planet. Wishing you a safe and wondrous journey.

Hi Sheen, I have been thinking about you so much. I hope your adventure is safe and filled with amazing sights. We had a wonderful weekend of cuddles with Mia, Luca and Nicolo. We cooked a big cake for Blakes birthday then ate it all! We did the pool, park, beach, shops, cricket, soccer, movies and Mia had a complete Brittany beauty salon makeover. Blake broke his arm too! All love you and miss you - but they really just want to come and sleep over again!!! Enjoy your journey babe - its a once in a lifetime moment! xx Shanne
