Finally seen it

18th March, 2008

We´ve finally seen it, our first iceberg. Standing like a silent sentinel guarding the gateway to the white continent. Majestic in its beauty, magnificent in its grandeur. But itself a stark warning that Antarctica is as fragile as it is magical. After leaving Ushuaia on Saturday and being blessed with what the captain himself described as “perfect” conditions in the Drake Passage, we have arrived and dropped anchor at King George Island. Bellingshausen stands before us, beckoning the expedition members to come ashore. Robert Swan has come aboard to greet us, his grueling two weeks living off sustainable energy having come to a successful end. Now our expedition really starts. An incredible week lies before us. One which promises enlightenment, amazement and enchantment. But we´re hear to learn. To be inspired. The journey has only just begun.

David’s initial thoughts on climate change…

On a personal level I have felt compelled to recycle more, use the car less and educate my children about the issue. On a professional level, I have tried to seek out and publish relevant stories and features which highlight what our own company is doing about the problem. Hence my participation in this expedition.
