1st Ice Burg

18th March, 2008

Lunch on the 17th was interrupted by an announcement over the loud speaker, “There is an ice burg portside.” At that moment the restaurant emptied and everyone filed to the deck to take a look. It was my first ice burg and I will never forget. It was taller than the ship and about as big. It was white (of course) and the most beautiful blue. It seemed as though it sat motionless, more like a large white rock than a floating piece of ice. The waves seemed to flow around it and over time had carved arched ridges near the waterline. Our ship drove around it and everyone on board took pictures. As a conservative estimate, I am guessing each person took an at least ten pictures of the ice burg. This gives close to 700 images of that single piece of ice!!

John’s initial thoughts about climate change…

I think the current situation of global warming/climate change has impacted the way I think about energy usage and supply. If we, as a global community, are going to address green house gas emissions with its impact on climate change, then we must have a reasonable and clear set of goals that can be achieved.
