Jest poniedzialek 17 marca, wczesny wieczor. Po okolo 48 godzinach podrozy przeplynelismy statkiem ‘Ushuaia’ z miasta Ushuaia w okolice E-base na Wyspie Krola Jerzego. Podroz przez Drake Passage dzielacy wybrzeze argentynskie i Antarktyke byla w opinii znawcow tego przejscia bardzo spokojna. Zazwyczaj spotyka sie bardzo burzliwe morze i wiekszosc osob na statku pada ofiara choroby morskiej. Tym razem morze bylo nam przychylne, z lekkim polnocno-zachodnim wiatrem pozwolilo nam bez wiekszych rewelacji przejsc przez Drake Passage. Jednak pomimo tego jakies kilkanascie osob mniej lub bardziej poczulo oznaki choroby morskiej. Niektorzy nie pokazali sie cala niedziele. Na pokladzie mielismy serie wykladow, prezentacji i filmow na temat antarktycznej fauny i flory, wypraw antarktycznych, zasad bezpieczenstwa oraz wymaganego zachowania i ubioru podczas wypraw na lad. Slyszymy na okraglo: Layers, layers, layers! (Warstwy, warstwy, warstwy!), co oznacza, ze mamy nakladac wiele warstw ubran, aby mozna bylo elastycznie je zakladac lub ubierac w zaleznosci od zmieniajacych sie warunkow atmosferycznych. Po drodze podziwialismy pierwszych przedstawicieli fauny antarktycznej jak np. wieloryby czy albatrosy. Spotkalismy tez potezna plywajaca lodowa wyspe. Widzielismy ze statku koreanska baze naukowa, nieopodal jest polska Baza Arctowski, ktorej jednak nie bedziemy mieli okazji zobaczyc. Jutro pierwszy dzien na antarktycznym ladzie. Okazja do poznania E-base, troche pracy fizycznej przy przygotowaniu bazy do pory zimowej.

It’s Monday 17th of March, early evening. After about 48 hour journey we got on board of ‘Ushuaia’ from Argentinean city of Ushuaia to nearby the E-base on King George Island. Voyage through the Drake Passage was very calm according to experts. Usually the sea is very rough and most of the people experience seasickness. This time the sea quite calm and let us go through the Drake Passage with no big issues, accompanied by light N-W wind. Despite this some of the team members experienced more or less what seasickness is, some of them did not turn up all Sunday. We have gone through series of lectures, presentations and films during the voyage. They were about the Antarctica wildlife, safety rules, required clothing and behavior when landing on the island. We can hear all around: Layers, layers, layers!, meaning that we should wear many layers of clothing so that you can pull them on and off according to changing weather conditions. On the way we saw first representatives of Antarctica wildlife like whales, albatrosses or petrels. We also met on our way huge iceberg. From the ship we could observe the Korean base. There is a Polish Arctowski base, but well not be able to see it. Tomorrow is the first day in Antarctic land. This will be opportunity for us to familiarize with the E-base as well as we will spend some time preparing the E-base for the coming winter season.

Marcin’s initial thoughts on climate change…

I remember as a child very chilly, snowy and nice winters in Poland with temperatures easily getting down to -30 degrees Celsius. Nowadays it is not true anymore. Snow is quire rarely (apart from mountain areas) and for very short time. There is much more flooding here in Poland than it used to be when I was a child.
