Paying the Drake tax

27th March, 2008

The sea did not make us the favor this time. I guess the Drake Passage wants to confirm its reputation, showing us all its greatness. 40-45 nautical miles wind & 10m high waves, making the MV Ushuaia (and us of-course) rolling like crazy in the middle of the ocean. Sea sickness dominates amongst the expeditioners, with few of us managing to stand up. I spent the whole night in the lounge, feeling safer comparing to my cabin. Trying to get some sleep in the 1,5 feet couch with all kinds of objects flying around you is not the ideal, but luckily I managed to get a couple of hours nap. Peter, Virginie & Marjan were somewhere around throughout the night, with Virginie “managing” to fall of her couch twice, ending to continue her sleep on the floor. Endless hours of being inactive give the green light to thousands of thoughts crossing your mind. Realizing what we have been exposed to during the last days. Thinking of what actions can you make to make this trip worth.

Team Inspire, Team Inspire, Team Inspire! Bronco 5 in the lounge area for disembarkation briefing!

Can’t wait to get back home ….

Almost like heaven

24th March, 2008

Sun is shining with winds hardly above 4 nautical miles. Are we really in Antarctica? Because I spent half the day with just a t-shirt.

Passing the Errera channel, it was almost like heaven. Enormous Ice Mountains all around us, peaceful waters, whales showing off. Landing at Paradise Bay, the most adventurous of us had an unforgettable downhill rolling.

That’s something to remember!

Our journey is not far from its end. Tomorrow night we will direct towards the Drake Passage (most probably enter it sometime early on Monday) on our way back home. Are we going to be as lucky as coming here? SOFOULINO Me acuerdo mucho de ti, te deseo que seas feliz con el bebe.

Camping last night

22nd March, 2008

Camping night last night! Who of us all would ever imagine spending a whole night camping out at the Antarctica….

Woke up around 5:00 am, got out of my little warm & safe sleeping bag, put on four (!) extra layers (to the three I was already wearing) and went out of a walk. A walk on ice.

Wandering around the bottom of the world, this unspoilt place that only 150,000 people have ever visited makes your thoughts go like the road-runner!

With the treaty, Antarctica provides an example of environmental best practice, and hosts valuable scientific research. Nations work alongside each other, in a way seen nowhere else on earth. The IAE6 team operates like that as well. The one-team spirit is evident every minute. People from all around the globe, who never met before, are 24-7 together and have with an unceasing will & action for voluntary work.

All of us here witness first hand the effects of global warming. Antarctica areas which were, until recently, fully covered with ice, are now sea water with only occasional thin slices of ice. Our little MV Ushuaia passes around places it never could before. The scariest thing of all is that this is actually caused by us back home. Each time we leave a light on without really needing it. Each time we boil more water that we actually need. Each time we leave appliances on standby. Each time of these, we are fully responsible for the world we will leave to our children.

Real life on pause

18th March, 2008

There are empty hours, but far from meaningless, for as they pass, they define the journey till now; the ultimate investment on time! Much time on your own, heading south to the last frontier of the world, inspires you thinking & reconsidering many things; especially what is important for you & maybe the whole world – but really important. Being in the middle of Drake Passage, you get pretty close with almost all expedition members - people from all continents with so many different backgrounds, cultures & characters. Everyone having to give you something. Another unique about this expedition is that you are really sealed off the rest of the world (no phone, no e-mail, no visits, no mail). Like your real life is put on pause. SOF TE ECHO MUCHO DE MENOS
